Executive Director Virginia Holmstrom Announces Her Retirement Date

    by Virginia Holmstrom, executive director

Where has the time gone? I’ve reached retirement age! Though I love these ministries with women and girls and find immense joy in working with volunteer leaders and the staff, I know that God is luring me toward volunteer ministries that await me in retirement years. My plan is to retire in one more year . . . on March 1, 2018. Saying so now gives President Angel Sullivan the time to lead a search process for the next executive director. She has appointed a search committee that has begun its work. Please embrace the search process with your prayers.

And what will I do after March 1, 2018? I have a list called “When I Grow Up, I Want to . . .” On my list are some personal yearnings: I want to assist immigrant families as they adjust to life in the U.S. I want to create spaces that bring people together through ministries of hospitality . . .most likely around my dinner table. I want to learn to speak Spanish a lot better. I want to love my grandchildren into caring persons who respect themselves and others. I want to grow zinnias and dahlias and sun-ripened tomatoes and give them away. I want to travel to new places and return to places that have stirred my soul. And maybe, if I have any time left over, I’d like to write something that will outlast me.

Until next March when I can wake up a little bit later and linger over that second cup of coffee with my husband (who will retire sooner than me), I’ll be right here, working with and for American Baptist women and girls. We’re vital partners, you know, for vital ministries with women and girls everywhere.
