Explaining the Women and Girls Mission Fund

By Bonnie Sestito, coordinator of Mission with Women and Girls

Throughout the Bible, we see evidence that God uses the gifts of women to bring about healing and wholeness in the world. Throughout history, women have responded to Christ’s call on their lives to do good, seek justice, and rescue the oppressed. (Sound familiar? It’s from our Women and Girls Mission Fund brochure.) The Women and Girls Mission Fund empowers you as American Baptist women to bring healing, wholeness, and hope to your sisters at home and around the world.

Because the Women and Girls Mission Fund is still fairly new it is not always understood how it works. AB Women’s Ministries wants to simplify the ways in which you are able to support mission and ministries that benefit women and girls. Giving to the Women and Girls Mission Fund provides support to our AB GIRLS ministry, Leadership Development Fund, national mission projects, and Refit. When funds are not designated they are dispersed accordingly by a team made up by the executive director, the treasurer, the AB GIRLS convenor, and coordinators of Young Adult Women’s Ministries and Mission with Women and Girls. National Board policy of AB Women’s Ministries determines the use of the funds. Also, 20% of all donations to the Women and Girls Mission Fund are used for the ongoing ministry needs of AB Women’s Ministries.

I’ve used a flow chart prepared by Virginia Holmstrom, executive director of AB Women’s Ministries, which I’ve enhanced, when sharing the Women and Girls Mission Fund with AB women and women’s groups.
